TUTTLE CHURCH STARTS BACK-PEW WAIT LIST; 23 FAMILIES CLAIM THEY WERE ALREADY ON IT

PAGER BUZZES DURING PRAYER, HALF THE SANCTUARY STANDS BECAUSE THEY THINK THEIR ROW IS READY

By Morgan Hale, KTNB 27 Senior Reporter

TUTTLE, OK — A Tuttle church's attempt to end the long-running practice of saving entire back pews has produced a restaurant-style waiting list, 23 disputed reservations and at least one family willing to wait 40 minutes rather than sit near the front.

The new system began Sunday morning after church leaders placed a small host stand in the foyer and announced that seats in the final three rows would be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

Within nine minutes, every back pew was spoken for.

Within 12, 23 families said they had already reserved one.

None could produce a confirmation.

Several said their usual attendance should count as a standing reservation.

Tuttle resident Luke Hendricks told the volunteer host that his family has occupied the left side of the second-to-last pew “since before the new carpet” and should not be required to put its name down like visitors.

The host explained that the system was created because four different families had made the same claim about that row.

Hendricks asked whether the church kept historical seating records.

The church does not.

By 9:48 a.m., the foyer contained a handwritten wait board listing family names, party sizes and estimated seating times.

One family requested a pew away from the nursery door.

Another asked for “something in the back, but not so far back it looks intentional.”

A third said it would accept a middle pew only if nobody interpreted the move as spiritual growth.

Volunteers distributed six restaurant pagers borrowed from a church member's catering business. Families were told the devices would buzz when a back row became available.

The plan remained under control until one pager activated during the opening prayer.

Approximately half the sanctuary stood up.

Only one family had been called.

The others later said they assumed their own pew was ready, heard movement nearby or did not want another household to reach the aisle first.

The pastor paused long enough for the group to sort itself into three lines, two arguments and one family that had already placed a Bible, a purse and a child's jacket across six feet of bench.

An usher removed the items and returned them to their owners.

The owners immediately asked whether the belongings established priority.

They did not.

Church leaders attempted to speed up the process by opening seating in the fourth row from the back.

Nobody accepted it.

The wait board continued to show 20 minutes.

At 10:07 a.m., volunteers changed the estimate to 35 minutes after two families decided they would rather miss the first hymn than sit where the pastor could make eye contact.

Hendricks remained near the host stand and asked to speak with whoever managed reservations.

He was directed to an usher.

The usher directed him to the sanctuary.

Hendricks returned to the host stand and requested to remain on the list.

By the sermon, the system had produced three no-shows, two families seated under different names and one household accused of joining a larger party solely to improve its position.

Church leaders have not decided whether the wait list will return next Sunday.

The host stand has been moved into storage, the pagers have been returned and the seating board now contains one instruction:

SEE USHER.

Hendricks has already asked whether that counts as a reservation.
