TUTTLE, OK — A Tuttle man's backyard barbecue entered a security dispute Sunday after he installed an electric livestock fence around his smoker to stop guests from opening it every time they walked past.

Wade Hollis said the enclosure became necessary after three separate men lifted the smoker lid and asked whether the brisket was ready.

All three had been told it wasn't.

“Every time somebody opens it, I lose heat,” Hollis said. “Apparently saying that out loud wasn't enough.”

The upgrade included temporary fence posts, electric wire and a gate handle normally used to access animals. Inside stood an electric smoker containing one brisket and no livestock.

Guests initially respected the boundary.

Then someone asked how they were supposed to look at the meat.

Hollis explained that preventing that was the entire project.

The first breach occurred while he was inside getting plates. A guest followed the fence charger's cord to a power strip and unplugged the strip from the outlet.

The fence stopped working.

So did the smoker.

By the time Hollis returned, the lid was open and two men were discussing whether he should have wrapped the brisket earlier.

One had never smoked a brisket.

He had watched several videos.

Hollis restored power, closed the lid and began questioning the guests about who had disconnected the perimeter. Nobody admitted unplugging the smoker. Several agreed that unplugging the fence had been reasonable.

“They invited us over to eat,” one guest said. “I didn't realize there'd be a gate.”

With dinner pushed back, guests began eating the potato salad and baked beans. Hollis remained beside the enclosure holding tongs, watching people who had brought folding chairs to his house.

His wife eventually asked whether the fence was keeping anyone from checking the brisket.

“Yes,” he said.

She pointed out that he was now personally guarding it anyway.

Hollis has since added a handwritten sign reading DO NOT UNPLUG and moved his chair inside the fence.

At last report, the guests had finished the sides.

The brisket remained in protective custody.
