TUTTLE WOMAN RECLAIMS SIX BORROWED CASSEROLE DISHES MID-POTLUCK; DINNER LEAVES WITH HER

NEIGHBORS FOLLOW MAIN COURSES TO FRONT PORCH; FOOD RETURNED ON PAPER PLATES

By Morgan Hale, KTNB 27 Senior Reporter

TUTTLE, OK — A neighborhood potluck relocated unexpectedly after a Tuttle woman recognized six of her missing casserole dishes on the serving table and decided their extended visits were over.

The woman had arrived carrying one covered dish and two empty insulated totes.

Organizers initially assumed she planned to take leftovers.

She began inspecting the bottoms of the pans before anyone had eaten.

The first dish carried her faded name beneath a strip of clear tape. The second had a chipped handle she identified without turning it over. The third was still wearing the lid she had been told was lost.

“That is interesting,” she said.

Within four minutes, she had located six containers borrowed for meals, gatherings and one occasion the current holder described only as “a while back.”

Each was full.

The woman put the lids on.

A neighbor suggested waiting until after dinner to sort it out.

The woman said that had been the arrangement last time.

Witnesses reported that she loaded chicken casserole, macaroni and cheese, two vegetable dishes, a cobbler and an unidentified layered item into the totes while the serving line was still forming.

One organizer asked whether she intended to take the food as well.

“I intend to take my dishes,” she said. “Y’all decide how attached you are to what’s in them.”

The distinction did not restore the missing entrées.

By the time someone located disposable containers, the woman had reached the door. Several guests followed with empty plates, initially to negotiate and then because she was carrying most of dinner.

The remaining buffet consisted of rolls, a bag of ice and a slow cooker whose owner had suddenly become very easy to identify.

Neighbors reconvened at the woman’s front porch, where she agreed to transfer the food onto paper plates.

Requests to borrow the dishes long enough to carry everything back were denied.

One guest offered to return a pan Monday.

The woman asked which Monday the guest had meant the first time.

A folding table was brought onto the porch. The meal resumed under new conditions: guests could have seconds, but no container with a lid was leaving the property.

Organizers say future potlucks may include a dish-return station.

The woman says she already has one.

It is her kitchen.
